East Bloomington South is a neighborhood in Bloomington, Minnesota, located south of the Minnesota River and east of Interstate 35W. The neighborhood is bordered by the Normandale Lake area to the north, West Bloomington to the west, and Richfield to the south. East Bloomington South is home to a number of parks and recreation areas, including the Richardson Nature Center, Hyland Hills Ski Area, and the Nine Mile Creek Wetland Management District. The neighborhood also contains a number of schools, including Valley View Middle School and Kennedy High School. Demographics

East Bloomington South has a population of 4,252 as of the 2010 census. The median income for a household in the neighborhood was $45,813, and the median income for a family was $52,500. 36.9% of the population and 30.4% of families were below the poverty line. The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 2.5% White, 89.8% African American, 3.3% Native American, 1.1% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.6% of the population. 

The majority of residents (98%) were African American, while the rest were White (0%), Native American (4%), Asian (2%), or of mixed race (2%). The median age in the neighborhood was 31 years. 30% of residents were under the age of 18; 8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26% were from 25 to 44; 25% were from 45 to 64; and 11% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 92 males.

Education

Education in East Bloomington South has been a controversial topic for many years. The neighborhood is home to several schools, including Jefferson High School, Washington Accelerated Learning Academy, and Kennedy Elementary School. While some parents feel that the quality of education in the area is sufficient, others have expressed concern about the lack of resources and opportunities available to students.
